Onthissparklingafternoonthetwoofthemwereupstairs,andDannyknewthattheyhadbeenmakinglove.Theyweredozingnow.Theywerehappy,heknew.Hismotherwasstillalittlebitafraid,buthisfather’sattitudewasstrange.Itwasafeelingthathehaddonesomethingthatwasveryhardandhaddoneitright.ButDannycouldnotseemtoseeexactlywhatthesomethingwas.Hisfatherwasguardingthatcarefully,eveninhisownmind.Wasitpossible,Dannywondered,tobegladyouhaddonesomethingandstillbesoashamedofthatsomethingthatyoutriednottothinkofit?Thequestionwasadisturbingone.Hedidn’tthinksuchathingwaspossible…inanormalmind.Hishardestprobingsathisfatherhadonlybroughthimadimpictureofsomethinglikeanoctopus,whirlingupintothehardbluesky.Andonbothoccasionsthathehadconcentratedhardenoughtogetthis,Daddyhadsuddenlybeenstaringathiminasharpandfrighteningway,asifheknewwhatDannywasdoing.
Nowhewasinthelobby,gettingreadytogoout.Hewentoutalot,takinghissledorwearinghissnowshoes.Helikedtogetoutofthehotel.Whenhewasoutinthesunshine,itseemedlikeaweighthadslippedfromhisshoulders.
Hepulledachairover,stoodonit,andgothisparkaandsnowpantsoutoftheballroomcloset,andthensatdownonthechairtoputthemon.
