           Encouragedbythisfirstvictory,hefreedhimselffromtheclawsofhisassailersand,leapingoverthebushesalongtheroad,ranswiftlyacrossthefields. Hispursuerswereafterhimatonce,liketwodogschasingahare. 

           Afterrunningsevenmilesorso,Pinocchiowaswell-nighexhausted.Seeinghimselflost,heclimbedupagiantpinetreeandsattheretoseewhathecouldsee. TheAssassinstriedtoclimbalso,buttheyslippedandfell. 

           Farfromgivingupthechase,thisonlyspurredthemon.Theygatheredabundleofwood,pileditupatthefootofthepine,andsetfiretoit.Inatwinklingthetreebegantosputterandburnlikeacandleblownbythewind. Pinocchiosawtheflamesclimbhigherandhigher.NotwishingtoendhisdaysasaroastedMarionette,hejumpedquicklytothegroundandoffhewent,theAssassinsclosetohim,asbefore. 

           Dawnwasbreakingwhen,withoutanywarningwhatsoever,Pinocchiofoundhispathbarredbyadeeppoolfullofwaterthecolorofmuddycoffee.
