           Pickinghimupfromthefloor,hefondledandcaressedhim,talkingtohimwhilethetearsrandownhischeeks: 

           "MylittlePinocchio,mydearlittlePinocchio!Howdidyouburnyourfeet?" 

           "Idon’tknow,Father,butbelieveme,thenighthasbeenaterribleoneandIshallrememberitaslongasIlive. ThethunderwassonoisyandthelightningsobrightandIwashungry.AndthentheTalkingCricketsaidtome,‘Youdeserveit;youwerebad;’andIsaidtohim,‘Careful,Cricket;’andhesaidtome,‘YouareaMarionetteandyouhaveawoodenhead;’andIthrewthehammerathimandkilledhim. Itwashisownfault,forIdidn’twanttokillhim.AndIputthepanonthecoals,buttheChickflewawayandsaid,‘I’llseeyouagain!Remembermetothefamily. Andmyhungergrew,andIwentout,andtheoldmanwithanightcaplookedoutofthewindowandthrewwateronme,andIcamehomeandputmyfeetonthestovetodrythembecauseIwasstillhungry,andIfellasleepandnowmyfeetaregonebutmyhungerisn’t!Oh!Oh!Oh!" AndpoorPinocchiobegantoscreamandcrysoloudlythathecouldbeheardformilesaround. 

           Geppetto,whohadunderstoodnothingofallthatjumbledtalk,exceptthattheMarionettewashungry,feltsorryforhim,andpullingthreepearsoutofhispocket,offeredthemtohim,saying: 

           "Thesethreepearswereformybreakfast,butIgivethemtoyougladly.Eatthemandstopweeping." 

           "Ifyouwantmetoeatthem,pleasepeelthemforme." 

           "Peelthem?"askedGeppetto,verymuchsurprised.
