Asilentzincpiperosefromthecementonhisgroinandwascoupledtoaslimrubberhosethatcarriedwastefromhiskidneysanddrippeditefficientlyintoaclear,stopperedjaronthefloor.Whenthejaronthefloorwasfull,thejarfeedinghiselbowwasempty,andthetwoweresimplyswitchedquicklysothatstuffcoulddripbackintohim.Alltheyeverreallysawofthesoldierinwhitewasafrayedblackholeoverhismouth.
ThesoldierinwhitehadbeenfilednexttotheTexan,andtheTexansatsidewaysonhisownbedandtalkedtohimthroughoutthemorning,afternoonandeveninginapleasant,sympatheticdrawl.TheTexannevermindedthathegotnoreply.
Temperaturesweretakentwiceadayintheward.EarlyeachmorningandlateeachafternoonNurseCramerenteredwithajarfullofthermometersandworkedherwayuponesideofthewardanddowntheother,distributingathermometertoeachpatient.Shemanagedthesoldierinwhitebyinsertingathermometerintotheholeoverhismouthandleavingitbalancedthereonthelowerrim.Whenshereturnedtothemaninthefirstbed,shetookhisthermometerandrecordedhistemperature,andthenmovedontothenextbedandcontinuedaroundthewardagain.Oneafternoonwhenshehadcompletedherfirstcircuitofthewardandcameasecondtimetothesoldierinwhite,shereadhistemperatureanddiscoveredthathewasdead.
"Murderer,"Dunbarsaidquietly.
TheTexanlookedupathimwithanuncertaingrin.
"Killer,"Yossariansaid.
"Whatareyoutalkin’about?"theTexanaskednervously.
