           Yossarianemittedalong,loud,croakinggaspofprotestwhenhetrudgedintiredlyafteramissionandfoundthemalreadythere.

           Therewerefourofthem,andtheywerehavingawhaleofagoodtimeastheyhelpedeachothersetuptheircots.Theywerehorsingaround.Themomenthesawthem,Yossarianknewtheywereimpossible.Theywerefrisky,eagerandexuberant,andtheyhadallbeenfriendsintheStates.Theywereplainlyunthinkable.

           Theywerenoisy,overconfident,empty-headedkidsoftwenty-one.Theyhadgonetocollegeandwereengagedtopretty,cleangirlswhosepictureswerealreadystandingontheroughcementmantelpieceofOrr’sfireplace.Theyhadriddeninspeedboatsandplayedtennis.Theyhadbeenhorsebackriding.Onehadoncebeentobedwithanolderwoman.Theyknewthesamepeopleindifferentpartsofthecountryandhadgonetoschoolwitheachother’scousins.TheyhadlistenedtotheWorldSeriesandreallycaredwhowonfootballgames.Theywereobtuse;theirmoralewasgood.Theyweregladthatthewarhadlastedlongenoughforthemtofindoutwhatcombatwasreallylike.TheywerehalfwaythroughunpackingwhenYossarianthrewthemout.

           Theywereplainlyoutofthequestion,YossarianexplainedadamantlytoSergeantTowser,whosesallowequinefacewasdespondentasheinformedYossarianthatthenewofficerswouldhavetobeadmitted.SergeantTowserwasnotpermittedtorequisitionanothersix-mantentfromGroupwhileYossarianwaslivinginonealone.
