AfterKidSampson’slegs,hewouldthinkofpitiful,whimperingSnowdenfreezingtodeathintherearsectionoftheplane,holdinghiseternal,immutablesecretconcealedinsidehisquilted,armor-plateflaksuituntilYossarianhadfinishedsterilizingandbandagingthewrongwoundonhisleg,andthenspillingitoutsuddenlyalloverthefloor.Atnightwhenhewastryingtosleep,Yossarianwouldcalltherollofallthemen,womenandchildrenhehadeverknownwhowerenowdead.Hetriedtorememberallthesoldiers,andheresurrectedimagesofalltheelderlypeoplehehadknownwhenachild—alltheaunts,uncles,neighbors,parentsandgrandparents,hisownandeveryoneelse’s,andallthepathetic,deludedshopkeeperswhoopenedtheirsmall,dustystoresatdawnandworkedinthemfoolishlyuntilmidnight.Theywerealldead,too.Thenumberofdeadpeoplejustseemedtoincrease.AndtheGermanswerestillfighting.Deathwasirreversible,hesuspected,andhebegantothinkhewasgoingtolose.
YossarianwaswarmwhenthecoldweathercamebecauseofOrr’smarvelousstove,andhemighthaveexistedinhiswarmtentquitecomfortablyifnotforthememoryofOrr,andifnotforthegangofanimatedroommatesthatcameswarminginsiderapaciouslyonedayfromthetwofullcombatcrewsColonelCathcarthadrequisitioned—andobtainedinlessthanforty-eighthours—asreplacementsforKidSampsonandMcWatt.
