Bombinghisownmenandplaneswasmorethaneventhemostphlegmaticobservercouldstomach,anditlookedliketheendforhim.High-rankinggovernmentofficialspouredintoinvestigate.NewspapersinveighedagainstMilowithglaringheadlines,andCongressmendenouncedtheatrocityinstentorianwrathandclamoredforpunishment.Motherswithchildrenintheserviceorganizedintomilitantgroupsanddemandedrevenge.Notonevoicewasraisedinhisdefense.Decentpeopleeverywherewereaffronted,andMilowasallwashedupuntilheopenedhisbookstothepublicanddisclosedthetremendousprofithehadmade.HecouldreimbursethegovernmentforallthepeopleandpropertyhehaddestroyedandstillhaveenoughmoneyleftovertocontinuebuyingEgyptiancotton.Everybody,ofcourse,ownedashare.Andthesweetestpartofthewholedealwasthattherereallywasnoneedtoreimbursethegovernmentatall.
"Inademocracy,thegovernmentisthepeople,"Miloexplained."We’repeople,aren’twe?Sowemightjustaswellkeepthemoneyandeliminatethemiddleman.Frankly,I’dliketoseethegovernmentgetoutofwaraltogetherandleavethewholefieldtoprivateindustry.Ifwepaythegovernmenteverythingweoweit,we’llonlybeencouraginggovernmentcontrolanddiscouragingotherindividualsfrombombingtheirownmenandplanes.We’llbetakingawaytheirincentive.
