WhenthechaplaindrovebackintotheclearingafterleavingColonelKorn,CorporalWhitcombwasoutsideinthemuggyhazetalkinginconspiratorialtonestoastrangechubbymaninamarooncorduroybathrobeandgrayflannelpajamas.Thechaplainrecognizedthebathrobeandpajamasasofficialhospitalattire.Neitherofthetwomengavehimanysignofrecognition.Thestranger’sgumshadbeenpaintedpurple;hiscorduroybathrobewasdecoratedinbackwithapictureofaB-25nosingthroughorangeburstsofflakandinfrontwithsixneatrowsoftinybombssignifyingsixtycombatmissionsflown.Thechaplainwassostruckbythesightthathestoppedtostare.Bothmenbrokeofftheirconversationandwaitedinstonysilenceforhimtogo.
