Heexperiencedakeenpremonitionofdangerandwonderedifthechaplaintoowereplottingagainsthim,ifthechaplain’sreticent,unimpressivemannerwerereallyjustasinisterdisguisemaskingafieryambitionthat,waydowndeep,wascraftyandunscrupulous.Therewassomethingfunnyaboutthechaplain,andthecolonelsoondetectedwhatitwas.Thechaplainwasstandingstifflyatattention,forthecolonelhadforgottentoputhimatease.Lethimstaythatway,thecoloneldecidedvindictively,justtoshowhimwhowasbossandtosafeguardhimselfagainstanylossofdignitythatmightdevolvefromhisacknowledgingtheomission.
ColonelCathcartwasdrawnhypnoticallytowardthewindowwithamassive,dullstareofmoodyintrospection.Theenlistedmenwerealwaystreacherous,hedecided.Helookeddownwardinmournfulgloomattheskeet-shootingrangehehadorderedbuiltfortheofficersonhisheadquartersstaff,andherecalledthemortifyingafternoonGeneralDreedlehadtongue-lashedhimruthlesslyinfrontofColonelKornandMajorDanbyandorderedhimtothrowopentherangetoalltheenlistedmenandofficersoncombatduty.Theskeet-shootingrangehadbeenarealblackeyeforhim,ColonelCathcartwasforcedtoconclude.
