           WeedswerenottheonlythingsFrankhadtocontendwitheither.BoysfromthevillagemadeahabitofthrowingstonesthroughthewindowsoftheRiddleHouse.TheyrodetheirbicyclesoverthelawnsFrankworkedsohardtokeepsmooth.Onceortwice,theybrokeintotheoldhouseforadare.TheyknewthatoldFrank’sdevotiontothehouseandthegroundsamountedalmosttoanobsession,anditamusedthemtoseehimlimpingacrossthegarden,brandishinghisstickandyellingcroakilyatthem.Frank,forhispart,believedtheboystormentedhimbecausethey,liketheirparentsandgrandparents,thoughhimamurderer.SowhenFrankawokeonenightinAugustandsawsomethingveryoddupattheoldhouse,hemerelyassumedthattheboyshadgoneonestepfurtherintheirattemptstopunishhim.

           ItwasFrank’sbadlegthatwokehim;itwaspaininghimworsethaneverinhisoldage.Hegotupandlimpeddownstairsintothekitchenwiththeideaofrefillinghishot-waterbottletoeasethestiffnessinhisknee.Standingatthesink,fillingthekettle,helookedupattheRiddleHouseandsawlightsglimmeringinitsupperwindows.Frankknewatoncewhatwasgoingon.Theboyshadbrokenintothehouseagain,andjudgingbytheflickeringqualityofthelight,theyhadstartedafire.

           Frankhadnotelephone,inanycase,hehaddeeplymistrustedthepoliceeversincetheyhadtakenhiminforquestioningabouttheRiddles’deaths.Heputdownthekettleatonce,hurriedbackupstairsasfastashisbadlegwouldallow,andwassoonbackinhiskitchen,fullydressedandremovingarustyoldkeyfromitshookbythedoor.Hepickeduphiswalkingstick,whichwasproppedagainstthewall,andsetoffintothenight.
