Infact(thereportcontinued,inatoneofunmistakablebewilderment),theRiddlesallappearedtobeinperfecthealth-apartfromthefactthattheywerealldead.Thedoctorsdidnote(asthoughdeterminedtofindsomethingwrongwiththebodies)thateachoftheRiddleshadalookofterroruponhisorherface-butasthefrustratedpolicesaid,whoeverheardofthreepeoplebeingfrightenedtodeath?
AstherewasnoproofthattheRiddleshadbeenmurderedatall,thepolicewereforcedtoletFrankgo.TheRiddleswereburiedintheLittleHangletonchurchyard,andtheirgravesremainedobjectsofcuriosityforawhile.Toeveryone’ssurprise,andamidacloudofsuspicion,FrankBrycereturnedtohiscottageonthegroundsoftheRiddleHouse.
"AsfarasI’mconcerned,hekilledthem,andIdon’tcarewhatthepolicesay,"saidDotintheHangedMan."Andifhehadanydecency,he’dleavehere,knowingashowweknowshedidit."
ButFrankdidnotleave.HestayedtotendthegardenforthenextfamilywholivedintheRiddleHouse,andthenthenext-forneitherfamilystayedlong.PerhapsitwaspartlybecauseofFrankthatthenewownerssaidtherewasanastyfeelingabouttheplace,which,intheabsenceofinhabitants,startedtofallintodisrepair.
ThewealthymanwhoownedtheRiddleHousethesedaysneitherlivedtherenorputittoanyuse;theysaidinthevillagethathekeptitfor"taxreasons,"thoughnobodywasveryclearwhatthesemightbe.ThewealthyownercontinuedtopayFranktodothegardening,however.Frankwasnearinghisseventy-seventhbirthdaynow,verydeaf,hisbadlegstifferthanever,butcouldbeseenpotteringaroundtheflowerbedsinfineweather,eventhoughtheweedswerestartingtocreepuponhim,tryashemighttosuppressthem.
