Harryplannedhisexcursioncarefully,becausehehadbeencaughtoutofbedandout-of-boundsbyFilchthecaretakerinthemiddleofthenightoncebefore,andhadnodesiretorepeattheexperience.TheInvisibilityCloakwould,ofcourse,beessential,andasanaddedprecaution,HarrythoughthewouldtaketheMaraudersMap,which,nexttothecloak,wasthemostusefulaidtorule-breakingHarryowned.ThemapshowedthewholeofHogwarts,includingitsmanyshortcutsandsecretpassagewaysand,mostimportantofall,itrevealedthepeopleinsidethecastleasminuscule,labeleddots,movingaroundthecorridors,sothatHarrywouldbeforewarnedifsomebodywasapproachingthebathroom.
OnThursdaynight,Harrysneakeduptobed,putonthecloak,creptbackdownstairs,and,justashehaddoneonthenightwhenHagridhadshownhimthedragons,waitedfortheportraitholetoopen.ThistimeitwasRonwhowaitedoutsidetogivetheFatLadythepassword("bananafritters"),"Goodluck,"Ronmuttered,climbingintotheroomasHarrycreptoutpasthim.
