Despitetheveryheavyloadofhomeworkthatthefourthyearshadbeengivenfortheholidays.Harrywasinnomoodtoworkwhentermended,andspenttheweekleadinguptoChristmasenjoyinghimselfasfullyaspossiblealongwitheveryoneelse.GryffindorTowerwashardlylesscrowdednowthanduringterm-time;itseemedtohaveshrunkslightlytoo,asitsinhabitantswerebeingsomuchrowdierthanusual.FredandGeorgehadhadagreatsuccesswiththeirCanaryCreams,andforthefirstcoupleofdaysoftheholidays,peoplekeptburstingintofeatherallovertheplace.Beforelong,however,alltheGryffindorshadlearnedtotreatfoodanybodyelseofferedthemwithextremecaution,incaseithadaCanaryCreamconcealedinthecenter,andGeorgeconfidedtoHarrythatheandFredwerenowworkingondevelopingsomethingelse.HarrymadeamentalnotenevertoacceptsomuchasacrispfromFredandGeorgeinfuture.Hestillhadn’tforgottenDudleyandtheTon-TongueToffee.
Snowwasfallingthicklyuponthecastleanditsgroundsnow.ThepaleblueBeauxbatonscarriagelookedlikealarge,chilly,frostedpumpkinnexttotheicedgingerbreadhousethatwasHagrid’scabin,whiletheDurmstrangship’sportholeswereglazedwithice,theriggingwhitewithfrost.Thehouse-elvesdowninthekitchenwereoutdoingthemselveswithaseriesofrich,warmingstewsandsavorypuddings,andonlyFleurDelacourseemedtobeabletofindanythingtocomplainabout.
