Harryspentmostoftheafternooninhisbedroom;hecouldn’tstandwatchingAuntPetuniapeeroutthroughthenetcurtainseveryfewseconds,asthoughtherehadbeenawarningaboutanescapedrhinoceros.Finally,ataquartertofive,Harrywentbackdownstairsandintothelivingroom.
AuntPetuniawascompulsivelystraighteningcushions.UncleVernonwaspretendingtoreadthepaper,buthistinyeyeswerenotmoving,andHarrywassurehewasreallylisteningwithallhismightforthesoundofanapproachingcar.Dudleywascrammedintoanarmchair,hisporkyhandsbeneathhim,clampedfirmlyaroundhisbottom.Harrycouldn’ttakethetension;helefttheroomandwentandsatonthestairsinthehall,hiseyesonhiswatchandhisheartpumpingfastfromexcitementandnerves.
Butfiveo’clockcameandthenwent.UncleVernon,perspiringslightlyinhissuit,openedthefrontdoor,peeredupanddownthestreet,thenwithdrewhisheadquickly.
