Bythefollowingmorning,hardlyanyoneinLittleHangletondoubtedthatFrankBrycehadkilledtheRiddles.
ButoverintheneighboringtownofGreatHangleton,inthedarkanddingypolicestation,Frankwasstubbornlyrepeating,againandagain,thathewasinnocent,andthattheonlypersonhehadseennearthehouseonthedayoftheRiddles’deathshadbeenateenageboy,astranger,dark-hairedandpale.Nobodyelseinthevillagehadseenanysuchboy,andthepolicewerequitesureFrankhadinventedhim.
Then,justwhenthingswerelookingveryseriousforFrank,thereportontheRiddles’bodiescamebackandchangedeverything.
Thepolicehadneverreadanodderreport.AteamofdoctorshadexaminedthebodiesandhadconcludedthatnoneoftheRiddleshadbeenpoisoned,stabbed,shot,strangles,suffocated,or(asfarastheycouldtell)harmedatall.
