Atlonglast,thegoldenplatesreturnedtotheiroriginalspotlessstate;therewasasharpupswinginthelevelofnoisewithintheHall,whichdiedawayalmostinstantlyasDumbledoregottohisfeet.Oneithersideofhim,ProfessorKarkaroffandMadameMaximelookedastenseandexpectantasanyone.LudoBagmanwasbeamingandwinkingatvariousstudents.Mr.Crouch,however,lookedquiteuninterested,almostbored.

Hetookouthiswandandgaveagreatsweepingwavewithit;atonce,allthecandlesexceptthoseinsidethecarvedpumpkinswereextinguished,plungingthemintoastateofsemidarkness.
