           Thenextmorning,Thomasfoundhimselfsittinginachair,worriedandanxious,sweating,facingelevenotherboys.Theywereseatedinchairsarrangedinasemicirclearoundhim.Oncesettled,herealizedtheyweretheKeepers,andtohischagrinthatmeantGallywasamongthem.OnechairdirectlyinfrontofThomasstoodemptyhedidn’tneedtobetoldthatitwasAlby’s.

           TheysatinalargeroomoftheHomesteadthatThomashadn’tbeeninbefore.Besidesthechairs,therewasnootherfurnitureexceptforasmalltableinthecorner.Thewallsweremadeofwood,aswasthefloor,anditdidn’tlooklikeanyonehadeverattemptedtomaketheplacelookinviting.Therewerenowindows;theroomsmelledofmildewandoldbooks.Thomaswasn’tcold,butshiveredallthesame.
