           ThomaswonderedlongandhardaboutAlby.It’dseemedsuchavictoryjusttosavehislife,bringhimbackfromanightintheMaze.Buthaditbeenworthit?Nowtheboywasinintensepain,goingthroughthesamethingsasBen.AndwhatifhebecameaspsychoticasBen?Troublingthoughtsallaround.

           TwilightfellupontheGladeandAlby’sscreamscontinuedtohaunttheair.Itwasimpossibletoescapetheterriblesound,evenafterThomasfinallytalkedtheMed-jacksintolettinghimgoweary,sore,bandaged,buttiredofthepiercing,agonizedwailsoftheirleader.NewthadadamantlyrefusedwhenThomasaskedtoseethepersonhe’driskedhislifefor.It’llonlymakeitworse,he’dsaid,andwouldnotbeswayed.

           Thomaswastootiredtoputupafight.He’dhadnoideaitwaspossibletofeelsoexhausted,despitethefewhoursofsleephe’dgotten.He’dhurttoomuchtodoanythingafterthat,andhadspentmostofthedayonabenchontheoutskirtsoftheDeadheads,wallowingindespair.Theelationofhisescapehadfadedrapidly,leavinghimwithpainandthoughtsofhisnewlifeintheGlade.Everymuscleached;cutsandbruisescoveredhimfromheadtotoe.Buteventhatwasn’tasbadastheheavyemotionalweightofwhathe’dbeenthroughthepreviousnight.Itseemedasifalltherealitiesoflivingtherehadfinallysettledinhismind,likehearingafinaldiagnosisofterminalcancer.

           Howcouldanyoneeverbehappyinalifelikethis?hethought.
