           Forthesecondnightinarow,ThomaswenttobedwiththehauntedimageofBen’sfaceburnedintohismind,tormentinghim.Howdifferentwouldthingsberightnowifitweren’tforthatoneboy?Thomascouldalmostconvincehimselfhe’dbecompletelycontent,happyandexcitedtolearnhisnewlife,aimforhisgoalofbeingaRunner.Almost.DeepdownheknewthatBenwasonlypartofhismanyproblems.

           Butnowhewasgone,BanishedtotheworldoftheGrievers,takentowherevertheytooktheirprey,victimtowhateverwasdonethere.ThoughhehadplentyofreasonstodespiseBen,hemostlyfeltsorryforhim.

           Thomascouldn’timaginegoingoutthatway,butbasedonBen’slastmoments,psychoticallythrashingandspittingandscreaming,henolongerdoubtedtheimportanceoftheGladerulethatnooneshouldentertheMazeexceptRunners,andthenonlyduringtheday.SomehowBenhadalreadybeenstungonce,whichmeantheknewbetterthanperhapsanyonejustexactlywhatlayinstoreforhim.

           Thenextmorning,dawnhadbarelytouchedtheskybeforetheworkingsoundsoftheGladewakenedThomasfromthedeepestslumbersincehe’darrived.Hesatup,rubbinghiseyes,tryingtoshaketheheavygrogginess.Givingup,helaybackdown,hopingnoonewouldbotherhim.
