           Inordertoshortenthejourney,theguidepassedtotheleftofthelinewheretherailwaywasstillinprocessofbeingbuilt. Thisline,owingtothecapriciousturningsoftheVindhiaMountains,didnotpursueastraightcourse. TheParsee,whowasquitefamiliarwiththeroadsandpathsinthedistrict,declaredthattheywouldgaintwentymilesbystrikingdirectlythroughtheforest. 

           PhileasFoggandSirFrancisCromarty,plungedtotheneckinthepeculiarhowdahsprovidedforthem,werehorriblyjostledbytheswifttrottingoftheelephant,spurredonashewasbytheskilfulParsee;buttheyenduredthediscomfortwithtrueBritishphlegm,talkinglittle,andscarcelyabletocatchaglimpseofeachother. AsforPassepartout,whowasmountedonthebeast’sback,andreceivedthedirectforceofeachconcussionashetrodalong,hewasverycareful,inaccordancewithhismaster’sadvice,tokeephistonguefrombetweenhisteeth,asitwouldotherwisehavebeenbittenoffshort. Theworthyfellowbouncedfromtheelephant’snecktohisrump,andvaultedlikeaclownonaspring-board; yethelaughedinthemidstofhisbouncing,andfromtimetotimetookapieceofsugaroutofhispocket,andinserteditinKiouni’strunk,whoreceiveditwithoutintheleastslackeninghisregulartrot. 

           Aftertwohourstheguidestoppedtheelephant,andgavehimanhourforrest,duringwhichKiouni,afterquenchinghisthirstataneighbouringspring,settodevouringthebranchesandshrubsroundabouthim. NeitherSirFrancisnorMr.Foggregrettedthedelay,andbothdescendedwithafeelingofrelief. "Why,he’smadeofiron!"exclaimedthegeneral,gazingadmiringlyonKiouni.
