HewasoneofthemostnoticeablemembersoftheReformClub,thoughheseemedalwaystoavoidattractingattention; anenigmaticalpersonage,aboutwhomlittlewasknown,exceptthathewasapolishedmanoftheworld. PeoplesaidthatheresembledByron—atleastthathisheadwasByronic;buthewasabearded,tranquilByron,whomightliveonathousandyearswithoutgrowingold.
CertainlyanEnglishman,itwasmoredoubtfulwhetherPhileasFoggwasaLondoner. Hewasneverseenon‘Change,norattheBank,norinthecounting-roomsofthe"City"; noshipsevercameintoLondondocksofwhichhewastheowner; hehadnopublicemployment; hehadneverbeenenteredatanyoftheInnsofCourt,eitherattheTemple,orLincoln’sInn,orGray’sInn; norhadhisvoiceeverresoundedintheCourtofChancery,orintheExchequer,ortheQueen’sBench,ortheEcclesiasticalCourts. Hisnamewasstrangetothescientificandlearnedsocieties,andheneverwasknowntotakepartinthesagedeliberationsoftheRoyalInstitutionortheLondonInstitution,theArtisan’sAssociation,ortheInstitutionofArtsandSciences. Hebelonged,infact,tononeofthenumeroussocietieswhichswarmintheEnglishcapital,fromtheHarmonictothatoftheEntomologists,foundedmainlyforthepurposeofabolishingperniciousinsects.
