           PhileasFoggrightlysuspectedthathisdeparturefromLondonwouldcreatealivelysensationattheWestEnd. ThenewsofthebetspreadthroughtheReformClub,andaffordedanexcitingtopicofconversationtoitsmembers. FromtheclubitsoongotintothepapersthroughoutEngland. Theboasted"touroftheworld"wastalkedabout,disputed,arguedwithasmuchwarmthasifthesubjectwereanotherAlabamaclaim. SometooksideswithPhileasFogg,butthelargemajorityshooktheirheadsanddeclaredagainsthim; itwasabsurd,impossible,theydeclared,thatthetouroftheworldcouldbemade,excepttheoreticallyandonpaper,inthisminimumoftime,andwiththeexistingmeansoftravelling. TheTimes,Standard,MorningPost,andDailyNews,andtwentyotherhighlyrespectablenewspapersscoutedMr.Fogg’sprojectasmadness; theDailyTelegraphalonehesitatinglysupportedhim. Peopleingeneralthoughthimalunatic,andblamedhisReformClubfriendsforhavingacceptedawagerwhichbetrayedthementalaberrationofitsproposer. 

           Articlesnolesspassionatethanlogicalappearedonthequestion,forgeographyisoneofthepetsubjectsoftheEnglish;andthecolumnsdevotedtoPhileasFogg’sventurewereeagerlydevouredbyallclassesofreaders. Atfirstsomerashindividuals,principallyofthegentlersex,espousedhiscause,whichbecamestillmorepopularwhentheIllustratedLondonNewscameoutwithhisportrait,copiedfromaphotographintheReformClub. AfewreadersoftheDailyTelegraphevendaredtosay,"Whynot,afterall?Strangerthingshavecometopass." 

           Atlastalongarticleappeared,onthe7thofOctober,inthebulletinoftheRoyalGeographicalSociety,whichtreatedthequestionfromeverypointofview,anddemonstratedtheutterfollyoftheenterprise.
