AllthisportionofBundelcund,whichislittlefrequentedbytravellers,isinhabitedbyafanaticalpopulation,hardenedinthemosthorriblepracticesoftheHindoofaith. TheEnglishhavenotbeenabletosecurecompletedominionoverthisterritory,whichissubjectedtotheinfluenceofrajahs,whomitisalmostimpossibletoreachintheirinaccessiblemountainfastnesses. ThetravellersseveraltimessawbandsofferociousIndians,who,whentheyperceivedtheelephantstridingacross-country,madeangryaridthreateningmotions. TheParseeavoidedthemasmuchaspossible. Fewanimalswereobservedontheroute;eventhemonkeyshurriedfromtheirpathwithcontortionsandgrimaceswhichconvulsedPassepartoutwithlaughter.
Inthemidstofhisgaiety,however,onethoughttroubledtheworthyservant. WhatwouldMr.FoggdowiththeelephantwhenhegottoAllahabad?Wouldhecarryhimonwithhim?Impossible!Thecostoftransportinghimwouldmakehimruinouslyexpensive. Wouldhesellhim,orsethimfree?Theestimablebeastcertainlydeservedsomeconsideration. ShouldMr.Foggchoosetomakehim,Passepartout,apresentofKiouni,hewouldbeverymuchembarrassed;andthesethoughtsdidnotceaseworryinghimforalongtime.
