           TheChina,inleaving,seemedtohavecarriedoffPhileasFogg’slasthope.Noneoftheothersteamerswereabletoservehisprojects.ThePereire,oftheFrenchTransatlanticCompany,whoseadmirablesteamersareequaltoanyinspeedandcomfort,didnotleaveuntilthe14th;theHamburgboatsdidnotgodirectlytoLiverpoolorLondon,buttoHavre;andtheadditionaltripfromHavretoSouthamptonwouldrenderPhileasFogg’slasteffortsofnoavail.TheInmansteamerdidnotdeparttillthenextday,andcouldnotcrosstheAtlanticintimetosavethewager.

           Mr.FogglearnedallthisinconsultinghisBradshaw,whichgavehimthedailymovementsofthetrans-Atlanticsteamers.

           Passepartoutwascrushed;itoverwhelmedhimtolosetheboatbythree-quartersofanhour.Itwashisfault,for,insteadofhelpinghismaster,hehadnotceasedputtingobstaclesinhispath!Andwhenherecalledalltheincidentsofthetour,whenhecountedupthesumsexpendedinpurelossandonhisownaccount,whenhethoughtthattheimmensestake,addedtotheheavychargesofthisuselessjourney,wouldcompletelyruinMr.Fogg,heoverwhelmedhimselfwithbitterself-accusations.Mr.Fogg,however,didnotreproachhim;and,onleavingtheCunardpier,onlysaid:"Wewillconsultaboutwhatisbestto-morrow.Come."

           ThepartycrossedtheHudsonintheJerseyCityferryboat,anddroveinacarriagetotheSt.NicholasHotel,onBroadway.Roomswereengaged,andthenightpassed,brieflytoPhileasFogg,whosleptprofoundly,butverylongtoAoudaandtheothers,whoseagitationdidnotpermitthemtorest.

           Thenextdaywasthe12thofDecember.Fromseveninthemorningofthe12thtoaquarterbeforenineintheeveningofthe21sttherewereninedays,thirteenhours,andforty-fiveminutes.
