Havingpurchasedtheusualquotaofshirtsandshoes,hetookaleisurelypromenadeaboutthestreets,wherecrowdsofpeopleofmanynationalities—Europeans,Persianswithpointedcaps,Banyaswithroundturbans,Sindeswithsquarebonnets,Parseeswithblackmitres,andlong-robedArmenians—werecollected.IthappenedtobethedayofaParseefestival. ThesedescendantsofthesectofZoroaster—themostthrifty,civilised,intelligent,andaustereoftheEastIndians,amongwhomarecountedtherichestnativemerchantsofBombay —werecelebratingasortofreligiouscarnival,withprocessionsandshows,inthemidstofwhichIndiandancing-girls,clothedinrose-colouredgauze,loopedupwithgoldandsilver,dancedairily,butwithperfectmodesty,tothesoundofviolsandtheclangingoftambourines. ItisneedlesstosaythatPassepartoutwatchedthesecuriousceremonieswithstaringeyesandgapingmouth,andthathiscountenancewasthatofthegreenestboobyimaginable.
Unhappilyforhismaster,aswellashimself,hiscuriositydrewhimunconsciouslyfartheroffthanheintendedtogo. Atlast,havingseentheParseecarnivalwindawayinthedistance,hewasturninghisstepstowardsthestation,whenhehappenedtoespythesplendidpagodaonMalabarHill,andwasseizedwithanirresistibledesiretoseeitsinterior. HewasquiteignorantthatitisforbiddentoChristianstoentercertainIndiantemples,andthateventhefaithfulmustnotgoinwithoutfirstleavingtheirshoesoutsidethedoor. ItmaybesaidherethatthewisepolicyoftheBritishGovernmentseverelypunishesadisregardofthepracticesofthenativereligions.
