AfterwhichMr.Foggquietlycontinuedhisdinner. FixhadgoneonshoreshortlyafterMr.Fogg,andhisfirstdestinationwastheheadquartersoftheBombaypolice. HemadehimselfknownasaLondondetective,toldhisbusinessatBombay,andthepositionofaffairsrelativetothesupposedrobber,andnervouslyaskedifawarranthadarrivedfromLondon. Ithadnotreachedtheoffice; indeed,therehadnotyetbeentimeforittoarrive. Fixwassorelydisappointed,andtriedtoobtainanorderofarrestfromthedirectoroftheBombaypolice. Thisthedirectorrefused,asthematterconcernedtheLondonoffice,whichalonecouldlegallydeliverthewarrant. Fixdidnotinsist,andwasfaintoresignhimselftoawaitthearrivaloftheimportantdocument;buthewasdeterminednottolosesightofthemysteriousrogueaslongashestayedinBombay. Hedidnotdoubtforamoment,anymorethanPassepartout,thatPhileasFoggwouldremainthere,atleastuntilitwastimeforthewarranttoarrive.
Passepartout,however,hadnosoonerheardhismaster’sordersonleavingtheMongoliathanhesawatoncethattheyweretoleaveBombayastheyhaddoneSuezandParis,andthatthejourneywouldbeextendedatleastasfarasCalcutta,andperhapsbeyondthatplace.
