           Theprairie,acrosswhichthesledgewasmovinginastraightline,wasasflatasasea.Itseemedlikeavastfrozenlake.Therailroadwhichranthroughthissectionascendedfromthesouth-westtothenorth-westbyGreatIsland,Columbus,animportantNebraskatown,Schuyler,andFremont,toOmaha.ItfollowedthroughouttherightbankofthePlatteRiver.Thesledge,shorteningthisroute,tookachordofthearcdescribedbytherailway.MudgewasnotafraidofbeingstoppedbythePlatteRiver,becauseitwasfrozen.Theroad,then,wasquiteclearofobstacles,andPhileasFogghadbuttwothingstofearanaccidenttothesledge,andachangeorcalminthewind.
