           Theylookuponfraudasagreatercrimethantheft,andthereforeseldomfailtopunishitwithdeath;fortheyallege,thatcareandvigilance,withaverycommonunderstanding,maypreserveaman’sgoodsfromthieves,buthonestyhasnodefenceagainstsuperiorcunning;and,sinceitisnecessarythatthereshouldbeaperpetualintercourseofbuyingandselling,anddealinguponcredit,wherefraudispermittedandconnivedat,orhasnolawtopunishit,thehonestdealerisalwaysundone,andtheknavegetstheadvantage.Iremember,whenIwasonceintercedingwiththeemperorforacriminalwhohadwrongedhismasterofagreatsumofmoney,whichhehadreceivedbyorderandranawaywith;andhappeningtotellhismajesty,bywayofextenuation,thatitwasonlyabreachoftrust,theemperorthoughtitmonstrousinmetoofferasadefencethegreatestaggravationofthecrime;
