ThesecivilcommotionswereconstantlyfomentedbythemonarchsofBlefuscu;andwhentheywerequelled,theexilesalwaysfledforrefugetothatempire.Itiscomputedthateleventhousandpersonshaveatseveraltimessuffereddeath,ratherthansubmittobreaktheireggsatthesmallerend.Manyhundredlargevolumeshavebeenpublisheduponthiscontroversy:butthebooksoftheBig-endianshavebeenlongforbidden,andthewholepartyrenderedincapablebylawofholdingemployments.Duringthecourseofthesetroubles,theemperorsofBlefuscadidfrequentlyexpostulatebytheirambassadors,accusingusofmakingaschisminreligion,byoffendingagainstafundamentaldoctrineofourgreatprophetLustrog,inthefifty-fourthchapteroftheBlundecral(whichistheirAlcoran).This,however,isthoughttobeamerestrainuponthetext;forthewordsarethese:‘thatalltruebelieversbreaktheireggsattheconvenientend.’Andwhichistheconvenientend,seems,inmyhumbleopiniontobelefttoeveryman’sconscience,oratleastinthepowerofthechiefmagistratetodetermine.Now,theBig-endianexileshavefoundsomuchcreditintheemperorofBlefuscu’scourt,andsomuchprivateassistanceandencouragementfromtheirpartyhereathome,thatabloodywarhasbeencarriedonbetweenthetwoempiresforsix-and-thirtymoons,withvarioussuccess;duringwhichtimewehavelostfortycapitalships,andamuchagreaternumberofsmallervessels,togetherwiththirtythousandofourbestseamenandsoldiers;andthedamagereceivedbytheenemyisreckonedtobesomewhatgreaterthanours.However,theyhavenowequippedanumerousfleet,andarejustpreparingtomakeadescentuponus;andhisimperialmajesty,placinggreatconfidenceinyourvalourandstrength,hascommandedmetolaythisaccountofhisaffairsbeforeyou."
