TheHouyhnhnmskeeptheYahoosforpresentuseinhutsnotfarfromthehouse;buttherestaresentabroadtocertainfields,wheretheydiguproots,eatseveralkindsofherbs,andsearchaboutforcarrion,orsometimescatchweaselsandluhimuhs(asortofwildrat),whichtheygreedilydevour.Naturehastaughtthemtodigdeepholeswiththeirnailsonthesideofarisingground,whereintheyliebythemselves;onlythekennelsofthefemalesarelarger,sufficienttoholdtwoorthreecubs.
Theyswimfromtheirinfancylikefrogs,andareabletocontinuelongunderwater,wheretheyoftentakefish,whichthefemalescarryhometotheiryoung.And,uponthisoccasion,Ihopethereaderwillpardonmyrelatinganoddadventure.
Beingonedayabroadwithmyprotectorthesorrelnag,andtheweatherexceedinghot,Ientreatedhimtoletmebatheinariverthatwasnear.Heconsented,andIimmediatelystrippedmyselfstarknaked,andwentdownsoftlyintothestream.IthappenedthatayoungfemaleYahoo,standingbehindabank,sawthewholeproceeding,andinflamedbydesire,asthenagandIconjectured,camerunningwithallspeed,andleapedintothewater,withinfiveyardsoftheplacewhereIbathed.Iwasneverinmylifesoterriblyfrightened.Thenagwasgrazingatsomedistance,notsuspectinganyharm.Sheembracedmeafteramostfulsomemanner.
