Butamoredangerousaccidenthappenedtomeinthesamegarden,whenmylittlenurse,believingshehadputmeinasecureplace(whichIoftenentreatedhertodo,thatImightenjoymyownthoughts,)andhavingleftmyboxathome,toavoidthetroubleofcarryingit,wenttoanotherpartofthegardenwithhergovernessandsomeladiesofheracquaintance.Whileshewasabsent,andoutofhearing,asmallwhitespanielthatbelongedtooneofthechiefgardeners,havinggotbyaccidentintothegarden,happenedtorangeneartheplacewhereIlay:thedog,followingthescent,camedirectlyup,andtakingmeinhismouth,ranstraighttohismasterwagginghistail,andsetmegentlyontheground.Bygoodfortunehehadbeensowelltaught,thatIwascarriedbetweenhisteethwithouttheleasthurt,oreventearingmyclothes.Butthepoorgardener,whoknewmewell,andhadagreatkindnessforme,wasinaterriblefright:hegentlytookmeupinbothhishands,andaskedmehowIdid?butIwassoamazedandoutofbreath,thatIcouldnotspeakaword.InafewminutesIcametomyself,andhecarriedmesafetomylittlenurse,who,bythistime,hadreturnedtotheplacewheresheleftme,andwasincruelagonieswhenIdidnotappear,noranswerwhenshecalled.Sheseverelyreprimandedthegardeneronaccountofhisdog.Butthethingwashushedup,andneverknownatcourt,forthegirlwasafraidofthequeen’sanger;andtruly,astomyself,Ithoughtitwouldnotbeformyreputation,thatsuchastoryshouldgoabout.
ThisaccidentabsolutelydeterminedGlumdalclitchnevertotrustmeabroadforthefutureoutofhersight.Ihadbeenlongafraidofthisresolution,andthereforeconcealedfromhersomelittleunluckyadventures,thathappenedinthosetimeswhenIwasleftbymyself.Onceakite,hoveringoverthegarden,madeastoopatme,andifIhadnotresolutelydrawnmyhanger,andrununderathickespalier,hewouldhavecertainlycarriedmeawayinhistalons.
