           “Isdatthegentleman-kinsmanwho’llmakeSissyalady?”askedtheyoungestchild.

           MeanwhilethemuslinedformofTesscouldbeseenstandingstill,undecided,besidethisturn-out,whoseownerwastalkingtoher.Herseemingindecisionwas,infact,morethanindecision:itwasmisgiving.Shewouldhavepreferredthehumblecart.Theyoungmandismounted,andappearedtourgehertoascend.Sheturnedherfacedownthehilltoherrelatives,andregardedthelittlegroup.Somethingseemedtoquickenhertoadetermination;possiblythethoughtthatshehadkilledPrince.Shesuddenlysteppedup;hemountedbesideher,andimmediatelywhippedonthehorse.Inamomenttheyhadpassedtheslowcartwiththebox,anddisappearedbehindtheshoulderofthehill.

           DirectlyTesswasoutofsight,andtheinterestofthematterasadramawasatanend,thelittleones’eyesfilledwithtears.Theyoungestchildsaid,“Iwishpoor,poorTesswasn’tgoneawaytobealady!”and,loweringthecornersofhislips,burstoutcrying.Thenewpointofviewwasinfectious,andthenextchilddidlikewise,andthenthenext,tillthewholethreeofthemwailedloud.

           ThereweretearsalsoinJoanDurbeyfield’seyesassheturnedtogohome.Butbythetimeshehadgotbacktothevillageshewaspassivelytrustingtothefavourofaccident.However,inbedthatnightshesighed,andherhusbandaskedherwhatwasthematter.
