24July. Whitby. —Lucymetmeatthestation,lookingsweeterandlovelierthanever,andwedroveuptothehouseattheCrescentinwhichtheyhaverooms. Thisisalovelyplace. Thelittleriver,theEsk,runsthroughadeepvalley,whichbroadensoutasitcomesneartheharbour. Agreatviaductrunsacross,withhighpiers,throughwhichtheviewseemssomehowfurtherawaythanitreallyis. Thevalleyisbeautifullygreen,anditissosteepthatwhenyouareonthehighlandoneithersideyoulookrightacrossit,unlessyouarenearenoughtoseedown. Thehousesoftheoldtown—thesideawayfromus,areallred-roofed,andseempileduponeovertheotheranyhow,likethepicturesweseeofNuremberg. RightoverthetownistheruinofWhitbyAbbey,whichwassackedbytheDanes,andwhichisthesceneofpartof"Marmion,"wherethegirlwasbuiltupinthewall. Itisamostnobleruin,ofimmensesize,andfullofbeautifulandromanticbits. Thereisalegendthatawhiteladyisseeninoneofthewindows. Betweenitandthetownthereisanotherchurch,theparishone,roundwhichisabiggraveyard,allfulloftombstones. ThisistomymindthenicestspotinWhitby,foritliesrightoverthetown,andhasafullviewoftheharbourandallupthebaytowheretheheadlandcalledKettlenessstretchesoutintothesea. Itdescendssosteeplyovertheharbourthatpartofthebankhasfallenaway,andsomeofthegraveshavebeendestroyed.
Inoneplacepartofthestoneworkofthegravesstretchesoutoverthesandypathwayfarbelow. Therearewalks,withseatsbesidethem,throughthechurchyard,andpeoplegoandsittherealldaylonglookingatthebeautifulviewandenjoyingthebreeze.
