           3October. Letmeputdownwithexactnessallthathappened,aswellasIcanremember,sincelastImadeanentry. NotadetailthatIcanrecallmustbeforgotten.InallcalmnessImustproceed. 

           WhenIcametoRenfield’sroomIfoundhimlyingontheflooronhisleftsideinaglitteringpoolofblood. WhenIwenttomovehim,itbecameatonceapparentthathehadreceivedsometerribleinjuries. Thereseemednoneoftheunityofpurposebetweenthepartsofthebodywhichmarksevenlethargicsanity. AsthefacewasexposedIcouldseethatitwashorriblybruised,asthoughithadbeenbeatenagainstthefloor. Indeeditwasfromthefacewoundsthatthepoolofbloodoriginated. 

           Theattendantwhowaskneelingbesidethebodysaidtomeasweturnedhimover, "Ithink,sir,hisbackisbroken. See,bothhisrightarmandlegandthewholesideofhisfaceareparalysed." Howsuchathingcouldhavehappenedpuzzledtheattendantbeyondmeasure. Heseemedquitebewildered,andhisbrowsweregatheredinashesaid, "Ican’tunderstandthetwothings. Hecouldmarkhisfacelikethatbybeatinghisownheadonthefloor. IsawayoungwomandoitonceattheEversfieldAsylumbeforeanyonecouldlayhandsonher. AndIsupposehemighthavebrokenhisneckbyfallingoutofbed,ifhegotinanawkwardkink. ButforthelifeofmeIcan’timaginehowthetwothingsoccurred. Ifhisbackwasbroke,hecouldn’tbeathishead,andifhisfacewaslikethatbeforethefalloutofbed,therewouldbemarksofit."
