Lucy,afterawhile,wasingayspirits,owing,Ithink,tosomedearcowswhocamenosingtowardsusinafieldclosetothelighthouse,andfrightenedthewitsoutofus. Ibelieveweforgoteverything,exceptofcourse,personalfear,anditseemedtowipetheslatecleanandgiveusafreshstart. Wehadacapital‘severetea’atRobinHood’sBayinasweetlittleold-fashionedinn,withabowwindowrightovertheseaweed-coveredrocksofthestrand. Ibelieveweshouldhaveshockedthe‘NewWoman’withourappetites. Menaremoretolerant,blessthem! Thenwewalkedhomewithsome,orrathermany,stoppagestorest,andwithourheartsfullofaconstantdreadofwildbulls.
Lucywasreallytired,andweintendedtocreepofftobedassoonaswecould. Theyoungcuratecamein,however,andMrs.Westenraaskedhimtostayforsupper. LucyandIhadbothafightforitwiththedustymiller. Iknowitwasahardfightonmypart,andIamquiteheroic. Ithinkthatsomedaythebishopsmustgettogetherandseeaboutbreedingupanewclassofcurates,whodon’ttakesupper,nomatterhowhardtheymaybepressedto,andwhowillknowwhengirlsaretired.
Lucyisasleepandbreathingsoftly. Shehasmorecolourinhercheeksthanusual,andlooks,ohsosweet. IfMr.Holmwoodfellinlovewithherseeingheronlyinthedrawingroom,Iwonderwhathewouldsayifhesawhernow. Someofthe‘NewWomen’writerswillsomedaystartanideathatmenandwomenshouldbeallowedtoseeeachotherasleepbeforeproposingoraccepting. ButIsupposethe‘NewWoman’won’tcondescendinfuturetoaccept.Shewilldotheproposingherself. Andanicejobshewillmakeofittoo! There’ssomeconsolationinthat.
