Thenwithoutwarningthetempestbroke. Witharapiditywhich,atthetime,seemedincredible,andevenafterwardsisimpossibletorealize,thewholeaspectofnatureatoncebecameconvulsed. Thewavesroseingrowingfury,eachover-toppingitsfellow,tillinaveryfewminutesthelatelyglassyseawaslikearoaringanddevouringmonster.White-crestedwavesbeatmadlyonthelevelsandsandrusheduptheshelvingcliffs.Othersbrokeoverthepiers,andwiththeirspumesweptthelanthornsofthelighthouseswhichrisefromtheendofeitherpierofWhitbyHarbour.
Thewindroaredlikethunder,andblewwithsuchforcethatitwaswithdifficultythatevenstrongmenkepttheirfeet,orclungwithgrimclasptotheironstanchions. Itwasfoundnecessarytocleartheentirepierfromthemassofonlookers,orelsethefatalitiesofthenightwouldhaveincreasedmanifold. Toaddtothedifficultiesanddangersofthetime,massesofsea-fogcamedriftinginland. White,wetclouds,whichsweptbyinghostlyfashion,sodankanddampandcoldthatitneededbutlittleeffortofimaginationtothinkthatthespiritsofthoselostatseaweretouchingtheirlivingbrethrenwiththeclammyhandsofdeath,andmanyaoneshudderedasthewreathsofsea-mistsweptby.
Attimesthemistcleared,andtheseaforsomedistancecouldbeseenintheglareofthelightning,whichcamethickandfast,followedbysuchpealsofthunderthatthewholeskyoverheadseemedtremblingundertheshockofthefootstepsofthestorm.
Someofthescenesthusrevealedwereofimmeasurablegrandeurandofabsorbinginterest. Thesea,runningmountainshigh,threwskywardswitheachwavemightymassesofwhitefoam,whichthetempestseemedtosnatchatandwhirlawayintospace.
