           Jackhadarrivedfromtheuniversityforty-fiveminuteslater,theBuickweighteddownwithsevenfriendsandakegofbeer.Afteraceremonialtoast(Wendyalsohadaglass,althoughsheordinarilyhadnotasteforbeer),Jackhadsignedtheacceptanceletter,putitinthereturnenvelope,andwentdowntheblocktodropitintheletterbox.Whenhecamebackhestoodgravelyinthedoorandsaid,"Veni,vidi,vici."Therewerecheersandapplause.Whenthekegwasemptyateleventhatnight,Jackandtheonlytwootherswhowerestillambulatorywentontohitafewbars.

           Shehadgottenhimasideinthedownstairshallway.Theothertwowerealreadyoutinthecar,drunkenlysingingtheNewHampshirefightsong.Jackwasdownononeknee,owlishlyfumblingwiththelacingsofhismoccasins.

           "Jack,"shesaid,"youshouldn’t.Youcan’teventieyourshoes,letalonedrive."

           Hestoodupandputhishandscalmlyonhershoulders."TonightIcouldflytothemoonifIwantedto."

           "No,"shesaid."NotforalltheEsquirestoriesintheworld."

           "I’llbehomeearly."

           Buthehadn’tbeenhomeuntilfourinthemorning,stumblingandmumblinghiswayupthestairs,wakingDannyupwhenhecamein.
