TherehadbeenotherthingsattheOverlook:abaddreamthatrecurredatirregularintervals-somesortofcostumepartyandhewascateringitintheOverlook’sballroomandattheshouttounmask,everybodyexposedfacesthatwerethoseofrottinginsects-andtherehadbeenthehedgeanimals.Twice,maybethreetimes,hehad(orthoughthehad)seenthemmove,eversoslightly.Thatdogwouldseemtochangefromhissitting-upposturetoaslightlycrouchedone,andthelionsseemedtomoveforward,asifmenacingthelittletykesontheplayground.LastyearinMayUllmanhadsenthimuptotheattictolookfortheornatesetoffiretoolsthatnowstoodbesidethelobbyfireplace.Whilehehadbeenuptherethethreelightbulbsstrungoverheadhadgoneoutandhehadlosthiswaybacktothetrapdoor.Hehadstumbledaroundforanunknownlengthoftime,closerandclosertopanic,barkinghisshinsonboxesandbumpingintothings,withastrongerandstrongerfeelingthatsomethingwasstalkinghiminthedark.Somegreatandfrighteningcreaturethathadjustoozedoutofthewoodworkwhenthelightswentout.Andwhenhehadliterallystumbledoverthetrapdoor’sringbolthehadhurrieddownasfastashecould,leavingthetrapopen,sootyanddisheveled,withafeelingofdisasterbarelyaverted.LaterUllmanhadcomedowntothekitchenpersonally,toinformhimhehadlefttheattictrapdooropenandthelightsburningupthere.
