           Thewallswerepainted,buttheplacewasmostlyhollow.Butofcourseitwouldhavetobe,hetoldhimself,orhowelsecouldthekidsgetinside?Whatplayfurnituremightgowiththeplaceinthesummerwasgone,probablypackedawayintheequipmentshed.Hecloseditupandheardthesmallclickasthelatchclosed.

           Hewalkedovertotheslide,setthehedge-clipperdown,andafteraglancebackatthedrivewaytomakesureWendyandDannyhadn’treturned,heclimbedtothetopandsatdown.Thiswasthebigkids’slide,butthefitwasstilluncomfortablytightforhisgrownupass.Howlonghaditbeensincehehadbeenonaslide?Twentyyears?Itdidn’tseempossibleitcouldbethatlong,itdidn’tfeelthatlong,butithadtobethat,ormore.HecouldrememberhisoldmantakinghimtotheparkinBerlinwhenhehadbeenDanny’sage,andhehaddonethewholebit-slide,swings,teeter-totters,everything.Heandtheoldmanwouldhaveahotdoglunchandbuypeanutsfromthemanwiththecartafterward.Theywouldsitonabenchtoeatthemandduskycloudsofpigeonswouldflockaroundtheirfeet.

           "Goddamscavengerbirds,"hisdadwouldsay,"don’tyoufeedthem,Jacky."Buttheywouldbothendupfeedingthem,andgigglingatthewaytheyranafterthenuts,thegreedywaytheyranafterthenuts.Jackdidn’tthinktheoldmanhadevertakenhisbrotherstothepark.Jackhadbeenhisfavorite,andevensoJackhadtakenhislumpswhentheoldmanwasdrunk,whichwasalotofthetime.
