Thehotelhadbeenclosedfortherestofthedecade.Therewasasinglestoryaboutit,aSundayfeatureheadlinedFORMERGRANDHOTELSINKINGINTODECAY.TheaccompanyingphotoswrenchedatJack’sheart:thepaintonthefrontporchpeeling,thelawnabaldandscabrousmess,windowsbrokenbystormsandstones.Thiswouldbeapartofthebook,ifheactuallywroteit,too-thephoenixgoingdownintotheashestobereborn.Hepromisedhimselfhewouldtakecareoftheplace,verygoodcare.ItseemedthatbeforetodayhehadneverreallyunderstoodthebreadthofhisresponsibilitytotheOverlook.Itwasalmostlikehavingaresponsibilitytohistory.
In1961fourwriters,twoofthemPulitzerPrizewinners,hadleasedtheOverlookandreopeneditasawriters’school.Thathadlastedoneyear.Oneofthestudentshadgottendrunkinhisthird-floorroom,crashedoutofthewindowsomehow,andfelltohisdeathonthecementterracebelow.Thepaperhintedthatitmighthavebeensuicide.
Anybighotel.havegotscandals,Watsonhadsaid,justlikeeverybighotelhasgotaghost.
