Smiling,Jackletthepaperdropbackintothebox.
Heflashedthelightaboveitanditspearedahanginglightbulb,almostburiedincobwebs.Therewasnochainpull.
Hestoodontiptoeandtriedscrewingthebulbin.Itlitweakly.Hepickedupthetoilet-paperinvoiceagainandusedittowipeoffsomeofthecobwebs.Theglowdidn’tbrightenmuch.
Stillusingtheflashlight,hewanderedthroughtheboxesandbalesofpaper,lookingforratspoor.Theyhadbeenhere,butnotforquitealongtime…maybeyears.Hefoundsomedroppingsthatwerepowderywithage,andseveralnestsofneatlyshreddedpaperthatwereoldandunused.
