InVermontthreeofJack’sfellowfacultymembershadhadchildrenaboutDanny’sage-andtherebadbeenthepreschool-butinthisneighborhoodtherewasnooneforhimtoplaywith.MostoftheapartmentswereoccupiedbystudentsattendingCU,andofthefewmarriedcoupleshereonArapahoeStreet,onlyatinypercentagehadchildren.Shehadspottedperhapsadozenofhighschoolorjuniorhighschoolage,threeinfants,andthatwasall.
"Mommy,whydidDaddylosehisjob?"
Shewasjoltedoutofherreverieandflounderingforananswer.SheandJackhaddiscussedwaystheymighthandlejustsuchaquestionfromDanny,waysthathadvariedfromevasiontotheplaintruthwithnovarnishonit.ButDannyhadneverasked.Notuntilnow,whenshewasfeelinglowandleastpreparedforsuchaquestion.Yethewaslookingather,maybereadingtheconfusiononherfaceandforminghisownideasaboutthat.Shethoughtthattochildrenadultmotivesandactionsmustseemasbulkingandominousasdangerousanimalsseenintheshadowsofadarkforest.Theywerejerkedaboutlikepuppets,havingonlythevaguestnotionswhy.Thethoughtbroughtherdangerouslyclosetotearsagain,andwhileshefoughtthemoffsheleanedover,pickedupthedisabledglider,andturneditoverinherhands.
"Yourdaddywascoachingthedebateteam,Danny.Doyourememberthat?"
"Sure,"hesaid."Argumentsforfun,right?"
