           GeorgehadfloatedthroughhisclassesatStovington.Asoccerandbaseballstar,hisacademicprogramhadbeenfairlyundemandingandhehadbeencontentwithC’sandanoccasionalBinhistoryorbotany.Hewasafiercefieldcontenderbutalackadaisical,amusedsortofstudentintheclassroomsJackwasfamiliarwiththetype,morefromhisowndaysasahighschoolandcollegestudentthanfromhisteachingexperience,whichwasatsecondhand.GeorgeHatfieldwasajock.Hecouldbeacalm,undemandingfigureintheclassroom,butwhentherightsetofcompetitivestimuliwasapplied(likeelectrodestothetemplesofFrankenstein’smonster,Jackthoughtwryly),hecouldbecomeajuggernaut.
