Inshort,hewasadope.HeoftenlookedtoYossarianlikeoneofthosepeoplehangingaroundmodernmuseumswithbotheyestogetherononesideofaface.Itwasanillusion,ofcourse,generatedbyClevinger’spredilectionforstaringfixedlyatonesideofaquestionandneverseeingtheothersideatall.Politically,hewasahumanitarianwhodidknowrightfromleftandwastrappeduncomfortablybetweenthetwo.HewasconstantlydefendinghisCommunistfriendstohisright-wingenemiesandhisright-wingfriendstohisCommunistenemies,andhewasthoroughlydetestedbybothgroups,whoneverdefendedhimtoanyonebecausetheythoughthewasadope.
