Theycalledhim"Yo-Yo"jocularlyandcameintipsylateatnightandwokehimupwiththeirclumsy,bumping,gigglingeffortstobequiet,thenbombardedhimwithasinineshoutsofhilariousgood-fellowshipwhenhesatupcursingtocomplain.Hewantedtomassacrethemeachtimetheydid.TheyremindedhimofDonaldDuck’snephews.TheywereafraidofYossarianandpersecutedhimincessantlywithnagginggenerosityandwiththeirexasperatinginsistenceondoingsmallfavorsforhim.Theywerereckless,puerile,congenial,naive,presumptuous,deferentialandrambunctious.Theyweredumb;theyhadnocomplaints.TheyadmiredColonelCathcartandtheyfoundColonelKornwitty.TheywereafraidofYossarian,buttheywerenottheleastbitafraidofColonelCathcart’sseventymissions.Theywerefourclean-cutkidswhowerehavinglotsoffun,andtheyweredrivingYossariannuts.Hecouldnotmakethemunderstandthathewasacrotchetyoldfogeyoftwenty-eight,thathebelongedtoanothergeneration,anotherera,anotherworld,thathavingagoodtimeboredhimandwasnotworththeeffort,andthattheyboredhim,too.Hecouldnotmakethemshutup;theywereworsethanwomen.Theyhadnotbrainsenoughtobeintrovertedandrepressed.
Croniesoftheirsinothersquadronsbegandroppinginunashamedlyandusingthetentasahangout.Therewasoftennotroomenoughforhim.Worstofall,hecouldnolongerbringNurseDucketttheretoliedownwithher.
