AnothergoodreasonwasthefactthathavingthechaplainaroundHeadquartersallthetimemadetheotherofficersuncomfortable.ItwasonethingtomaintainliaisonwiththeLord,andtheywereallinfavorofthat;itwassomethingelse,though,tohaveHimhangingaroundtwenty-fourhoursaday.Allinall,asColonelKorndescribedittoMajorDanby,thejitteryandgoggle-eyedgroupoperationsofficer,thechaplainhaditprettysoft;hehadlittlemoretodothanlistentothetroublesofothers,burythedead,visitthebedriddenandconductreligiousservices.Andtherewerenotsomanydeadforhimtoburyanymore,ColonelKornpointedout,sinceoppositionfromGermanfighterplaneshadvirtuallyceasedandsinceclosetoninetypercentofwhatfatalitiestherestillwere,heestimated,perishedbehindtheenemylinesordisappearedinsidetheclouds,wherethechaplainhadnothingtodowithdisposingoftheremains.Thereligiousserviceswerecertainlynogreatstrain,either,sincetheywereconductedonlyonceaweekattheGroupHeadquartersbuildingandwereattendedbyveryfewofthemen.
Actually,thechaplainwaslearningtoloveitinhisclearinginthewoods.BothheandCorporalWhitcombhadbeenprovidedwitheveryconveniencesothatneithermighteverpleaddiscomfortasabasisforseekingpermissiontoreturntotheHeadquartersbuilding.
