           Mr.H.G.Wellsoncewroteastoryaboutamanwhoinventedatimemachine,andIhavediscoveredthat,inthewritingofthesememoirs,Ihavecreatedmyowntimemachine.UnlikeWells’s,itcanonlytravelintothepastbackto1932,asamatteroffact,whenIwasthebull-goosescrewinEBlockofColdMountainStatePenitentiarybutit’seerilyefficient,forallthat.Still,thistimemachineremindsmeoftheoldFordIhadinthosedays:youcouldbesurethatitwouldstarteventually,butyouneverknewifaturnofthekeywouldbeenoughtofirethemotor,orifyouweregoingtohavetogetoutandcrankuntilyourarmpracticallyfelloff.

           I’vehadalotofeasystartssinceIstartedtellingthestoryofJohnCoffey,butyesterdayIhadtocrank.IthinkitwasbecauseI’dgottentoDelacroix’sexecution,andpartofmyminddidn’twanttohavetorelivethat.Itwasabaddeath,aterribledeath,andithappenedthewayitdidbecauseofPercyWetmore,ayoungmanwholovedtocombhishairbutcouldn’tstandtobelaughedatnotevenbyahalfbaldlittleFrenchmanwhowasnevergoingtoseeanotherChristmas.

           Aswithmostdirtyjobs,however,thehardestpartisjustgettingstarted.Itdoesn’tmattertoanenginewhetheryouusethekeyorhavetocrank;onceyougetitgoing,it’llusuallyrunjustassweeteitherway.That’showitworkedformeyesterday.Atfirstthewordscameinlittleburstsofphrasing,theninwholesentences,theninatorrent.
