           ThatwastheweekMelindaMoores,thewarden’swife,camehomefromIndianola.Thedoctorsweredonewithher;theyhadtheirinteresting,newfangledX-rayphotographsofthetumorinherhead;theyhaddocumentedtheweaknessinherhandandtheparalyzingpainsthatrackedheralmostconstantlybythen,andweredonewithher.TheygaveherhusbandabunchofpillswithmorphineinthemandsentMelindahometodie.HalMooreshadsomesick-leavepiledupnotalot,theydidn’tgiveyoualotinthosedays,buthetookwhathehadsohecouldhelpherdowhatshehadtodo.

           MywifeandIwenttoseeherthreedaysorsoaftershecamehome.IcalledaheadandHalsaidyes,thatwouldbefine,Melindawashavingaprettygooddayandwouldenjoyseeingus.

           "Ihatecallslikethis,"IsaidtoJaniceaswedrovetothelittlehousewheretheMooreseshadspentmostoftheirmarriage.

           WefoundMelindainthesittingroom,plantedinabrightslantofunseasonablywarmOctobersun,andmyfirstshockedthoughtwasthatshehadlostninetypounds.Shehadn’t,ofcourseifshe’dlostthatmuchweight,shehardlywouldhavebeenthereatallbutthatwasmybrain’sinitialreactiontowhatmyeyeswerereporting.Herfacehadfallenawaytoshowtheshapeoftheunderlyingskull,andherskinwasaswhiteasparchment.
