           Withoutpausingtothink,hedidtheonlythingthatmadesense-heflunghimselfforwardintothewater.

           Thefirstgulpoficylakewaterfeltlikethebreathoflife.Hisheadhadstoppedspinning;hetookanothergreatgulpofwaterandfeltitpasssmoothlythroughhisgills,sendingoxygenbacktohisbrain.Hestretchedouthishandsinfrontofhimandstaredatthem.Theylookedgreenandghostlyunderthewater,andtheyhadbecomewebbed.Hetwistedaroundandlookedathisbarefeet-theyhadbecomeelongatedandthetoeswerewebbedtoo:Itlookedasthoughhehadsproutedflippers.

           Thewaterdidn’tfeelicyanymoreeither...onthecontrary,hefeltpleasantlycoolandverylight....Harrystruckoutoncemore,marvelingathowfarandfasthisflipper-likefeetpropelledhimthroughthevater,andnoticinghowclearlyhecouldsee,andhowhenolongerseemedtoneedtoblink.Hehadsoonswumsofarintothelakethathecouldnolongerseethebottom.Heflippedoveranddivedintoitsdepths.

           Silencepresseduponhisearsashesoaredoverastrange,dark,foggylandscape.Hecouldonlyseetenfeetaroundhim,sothatashespedthrouughthewaternewscenesseemedtoloomsuddenlyoutoftheincomingdarkness:forestsofrippling,tangledblackweed,wideplainsofmudlitteredwithdull,glimmeringstones.Heswamdeeperanddeeper,outtowardthemiddleofthelake,hiseyeswide,staringthroughtheeerilygray-litwateraroundhimtotheshadowbeyond,wherethewaterbecameopaque.

           Smallfishflickeredpasthimlikesilverdarts.
