The Second Task

           Thewhistleechoedshrillyinthecold,stillair;thestandseruptedwithcheersandapplause;withoutlookingtoseewhattheotherchampionsweredoing,Harrypulledoffhisshoesandsocks,pulledthehandfulofgillyweedoutofhispocket,stuffeditintohismouth,andwadedoutintothelake.

           Itwassocoldhefelttheskinonhislegssearingasthoughthiswerefire,noticywater.Hissoddenrobesweighedhimdownashewalkedindeeper;nowthewaterwasoverhisknees,andhisrapidlynumbingfeetwereslippingoversiltandflat,slimystones.Hewaschewingthegillyweedashardandfastashecould;itfeltunpleasantlyslimyandrubbery,likeoctopustentacles.Waist-deepinthefreezingwaterhestopped,swallowed,andwaitedforsomethingtohappen.

           Hecouldhearlaughterinthecrowdandknewhemustlookstupid,walkingintothelakewithoutshowinganysignofmagicalpower.Thepartofhimthatwasstilldrywascoveredingoosepimples;halfimmersedintheicywater,acruelbreezeliftinghishair,Harrystartedtoshiverviolently.Heavoidedlookingatthestands;thelaughterwasbecominglouder,andtherewerecatcallsandjeeringfromtheSlytherins....

           Then,quitesuddenly,Harryfeltasthoughaninvisiblepillowhadbeenpressedoverhismouthandnose.Hetriedtodrawbreath,butitmadehisheadspin;hislungswereempty,andhesuddenlyfeltapiercingpainoneithersideofhisneck-

           Harryclappedhishandsaroundhisthroatandfelttwolargeslitsjustbelowhisears,flappinginthecoldair....Hehadgills.
